Pasture fence has one job that wood privacy fence does not, it has to hold an animal that leans on it, rubs on it, and tests it every day. That changes how we build it. Corner and gate posts are set bigger and deeper than line posts because they carry the tension of the whole run, and a corner that moves will slowly walk your entire fence line out of square. Line posts space out further than a residential fence, since three and four rail runs depend on the rail itself for a lot of the strength.

Four rail keeps smaller livestock and young animals in better than three rail, and it looks the part on a property line facing the road. Crossbuck panels are mostly used at entrances and gate openings for the look, they are not built to carry the same pressure as a straight run of rail.

When the fence needs to actually keep something in, whether that is a dog that digs or goats that go through anything with a gap, we run welded wire mesh behind the rails and attach it to the posts, not just stapled to the wood. Wire that is only fastened to rails works loose fast once an animal starts testing it. Red clay ground here drains slow, so we watch post rot at the base closely and use ground contact rated lumber on anything set in soil that stays wet after rain.

How it runs

  1. Walk the property line We check existing fence lines, corners, and low spots that hold water, and plan post placement around them.
  2. Set corner and gate posts These carry the tension for the whole run so they go in bigger, deeper, and get extra time to cure before rails go on.
  3. Line posts and rails Line posts go in at wider spacing than a residential fence, then rails are run and leveled across the full length.
  4. Wire and gates Welded wire is fastened directly to posts where livestock containment matters, and gates are hung and adjusted last.
